Awesome Travel Apps for Students

theaspiringMD

Today, we have applications for almost everything, and these can make student lives easier, less expensive, and more fun!

Traveling around forms a major part of student life. Not all freshers and (in some cases) returning students have their official driving permits and, thus, we rely deeply on other modes of transport such as Uber or coaches.

Nowadays, with the aid of mobile applications, we can easily and reliably get real-time updates, and book our trips in advance. Here’s a list of travel applications that can be truly beneficial to students in the UK. The list is not exhaustive, but it does contain a handful of helpful elements!

User friendly and accurate, Trainline is a digital platform for viewing train and coach schedules, and booking trips online. It also allows us to compare the prices for coaches and trains and choose which option suits our journey best. Whether you want to travel to explore different regions in the UK or just go around to shop, this app is a very practical tool. Note that by planning early booking your trips in advance, you can save a substantial amount of money. Trainline estimates that by booking your train tickets well in advance you can save up to 61% of the standard fare that you would pay at a train station!

This might be the first app that crosses the minds of many of us when we think about public transport. Reliable and safe, Uber offers round the clock services for commuters. Since we can request a ride with practically any location as our pick up point, this app can be particularly helpful when we need to reach our destinations in a relatively short amount of time.  Additionally, the Uber fare splitting option makes it a good value for money.

Some additional tools such as Uber Eats which is a doorstep food delivery facility, or Uber’s electric bike rental service are also worth exploring.

Moovit offers a free and user-friendly platform for commuters to obtain up to date information about routes for buses and trains. One of its most amazing features is that it provides real-time updates about the arrival times of buses. Hence, whilst waiting at a bus stop, you can easily identify how much time is left for your next bus to show up. Furthermore, once you have boarded a bus, you can keep track of which route the bus is following, how many bus stops it will cross, and how far away your destination is!

Top Travel Tip: If you’re a frequent train traveller aged between 16 and 25, then getting a 16-25 Railcard might actually be a great idea! You can either obtain a hardcopy of your Railcard, or opt for a digital one. Either way, this card costs only £30 but allows you to save 1/3 on all your rail fares throughout Great Britain! Isn't that a perfect asset to university students who often have to keep within the budget?

Disclaimer: We are not affiliated with the developers or promoters of the abovementioned applications in any way, but felt that it would be worth sharing them with you, so you can make the most out of these mobile applications!
